the Peace of Westphalia ("Westfälischer Friede"), signed in Münster and Osnabrück, ended the Thirty Years' War.
In the second world war large parts of the city were destroyed, but rebuilt faithfully after the war, so you can see a picturesque old town still today.
Münster was awarded as most "Liveable Community" in the world in the category of middle-sized towns (LivCom-Award) in 2004.
